The recent appearance of a device called PHASE on the market has caused quite a stir in the dj environment. The now-named "game changerem" wireless tracker has changed the perception of DJ as the only person responsible for having fun by choosing and mixing live music, not for the first time anyway. We have decided to gather in this text all revolutionary technological changes that have changed the disc jockey's tools during the half-century. Let's start with the very concept of DJ, which was coined in the 1960s, but it is not known who its author was. From the beginning, however, the DJs were accompanied by turntables being a tool for playing music, enriched with a mixer for a smooth mix of two vinyl records lying on the plates. A classic set of two adapters and a mixer for a long time in the minds of the participants of events twisted by the DJ, especially after the premiere of the Technics SL-1200 turntable! This classic from 1972 and its improved version from 1978 pushed djs to look for new ideas for creating their own styles. The appearance of turntablists, or units treating the turntable as an instrument, caused that divisions among the DJs began to be used due to the areas of their operation and the music they played. The technology developed, as did the turntables, who competed with each other not only on city streets or club stages but also on specially organized competitions.
Technology has continued to evolve, but it has not changed the status of a vinyl record in the industry, even after the premiere of a much lighter and more capacious compact disc. Only the appearance of the Pioneer cd-players shook the turntablist market a bit. Cheaper CDs, easier through access to music have developed this field of the stage market. New tools for the mix were his taste especially for DJs who play electronic music. It resulted from a number of effects available in the devices, which were hard to find in traditional turntables. Especially, that ready-made hybrids of players with mixer have been released more and more often. Inventing vinyls with a timecode in the early 2000s and dedicated to them a "black box" enabling the connection of turntables with a computer turned the game upside down. The adaptation of all suitable mixers to this has created the term Digital Vinyl System, which can not even be explained. Protoplasts include Searto and Rane, whose combined forces created a specific image of dj'ing rooted in the heads of the listeners.
The PHASE device presented by the MWM company at this year's NAMM exhibition made a huge impression on the dj's and the rest of the turntablist people watching the event. What charmed them so much? Maybe a vision of a needless, bezramienna system that recognizes and reads each rotation of its position, so that you can manipulate any selected audio files from your computer's library? Sounds revolutionary, right? Another question that should be asked is what and when will be next? Taking into account the pace of change, no matter what it is, it will probably appear soon and again will overturn our view of the upside down dj features.
